Stop Congressional Pay During Any Government Shutdown

To the Members of the United States Congress: We, the undersigned, urge Congress to pass legislation that suspends congressional pay for the entire duration of any federal government shutdown even if just one agency—regardless of cause, length, or political circumstances. Government shutdowns disrupt essential services, delay paychecks for federal employees, and create uncertainty for families and communities across the country. It is fundamentally unfair for lawmakers to continue receiving full compensation while the people they represent bear the consequences of legislative gridlock. We call for a clear, accountable standard: No pay for Members of Congress during any government shutdown even if just one Agency. No retroactive pay once the shutdown ends. Equal treatment for all shutdowns, regardless of which branch or party is responsible. This policy is not about punishment—it is about fairness, accountability, and shared responsibility. If the government cannot operate because agreement cannot be reached, those responsible for governing should share in the consequences. We respectfully request that Congress adopt this policy to demonstrate solidarity with federal workers and strengthen public trust in our democratic institutions. Why This Matters Federal workers and military families often go unpaid during shutdowns. Essential services are disrupted nationwide. Congressional pay continuing during shutdowns undermines public confidence. Shared sacrifice encourages responsible governance. Call to Action Sign this petition to demand fairness, accountability, and responsible leadership. Congress should not be paid when the government is shut down.
